The illustrated book “Vernacle”
This book is the outcome of a creative dialogue between Joan Fossas (illustrations) and Gerard Fossas (text). The project, originally conceived as a series of Romanesque-inspired images accompanied by brief descriptions, gradually evolved into an expanded concept of reading—one that challenges the boundaries between book, artistic object, and multimedia experience.
Driven by a desire for innovation and adaptation to contemporary times, “Vernacle” transcends the conventional editorial format: printed pages coexist with additional resources —such as an animated video with integrated narration— that amplify the act of reading and transform it into an immersive, multisensory, and contemporary event.
The work is rooted in the imagery of Catalan Romanesque art and draws inspiration from the foundational legend of Otger Cataló and the Seven Barons of Fame. This contemporary re-reading does more than revisit a mythical origin: it re-signifies it, establishing a fertile bridge between tradition and modernity, between heritage and creation. In this way, “Vernacle” becomes an aesthetic and critical experience that engages the reader, inviting both reflection and contemplation.
